Eighty-nine human tumor tissues were examined for the presence of Regan isozyme of alkaline phosphatase, beta-subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin, and of carcinoembryonic antigen by immunoperoxidase staining. CEA was the most commonly detectable antigen in the cases examined here, whereas Regan isozyme was rarely found in these tumor specimens. Multiple expression of the marker antigen, such as concordance of CEA and β-HCG was shown in some cases. Tumor marker and its incidence seemed to be different depending on the origin of the tumors, histological type, and the degree of differentiation. Well differentiated tumors were likely to show a higher incidence of certain markers than poorly differentiated carcinomas.
