Enzyme histochemical analysis of the portal vein of five different mammalian species (rat, guinea pig, rabbit, dog, human) were studied by light microscopy with emphasis on the enzyme activities contributing to glycolysis and the tricarboxylic cycle. In human endothelial cells aldolase activity was very slight. LDH, MDH and ATPase activity was intense in all species, and ICDH and SDH activity was weak. G-6-Pase activity was undetectable. α-Glycerophosphate DH activity was most intense in human and slightly lower in guinea pig and rabbit. In the circular smooth muscle fibers LDH, MDH and α-glycerophosphate DH activity was intense in all species. SDH activity was higher in the rat, dog and man than in the guinea pig and rabbit. In the longitudinal smooth muscle fibers aldolase activity was most intense in man, and LDH, SDH, MDH and α-glycerophosphate DH activity was intense in all species. ICDH activity was higher in the rat and man than in the guinea pig, rabbit and dog.
