Electron microscopy for the cytochemistry of cholinesterase was performed in the human intercostal muscle by using an indoxyl acetate esterase method. The enzyme activity was visible as a fine and nondroplet electron opaque endproduct in the axonal plasma membrane, the sarcolemmal plasma membrane of the muscle fiber, the junctional cleft, the endoneurium, and unknown membrane system between the muscle fibers.
