In many speech tasks the oral and laryngeal articulatory motions behave as coordinative structures, and their temporal coordination is imperative in the production of voiceless consonants. This study examines the relative timing between oral constriction and glottal opening with respect to consonant form (single vs. geminate) and consonant type (fricative vs. stop) in Japanese. The motions of the jaw, lips, tongue, and glottis of three male speakers were recorded using EMA (electro-magnetic articulograph), PGG (photoglottograph), and EGG (electroglottograph) techniques. A set of /iie eCe desu/ and /iie eQCe desu/ sentences, containing voiceless consonants /s, t, φ, p/, was used for the test utterances. The /QC/ in the sentence represents the geminate form in Japanese. The experimental data show that, for each consonant, there is a control rule that decides the temporal relation between oral constriction release and glottal opening peak for both single and geminate forms. The data also show that the control rule for the fricatives is similar to that for the stops, and that, for the stops, the glottal opening peak doesn't always occur after the burst produced by oral closure release.
