In the Old Church Slavonic translation of the Evangels, verbs of speech, glagolali or resti, are used in order to introduce words of Jesus or other characters directly into the text. In this paper I tried to make clear functions and distributions of these two verbs in the text, paying special attention to the difference between aorist of glagolati and aorist of resti. First I proposed that the case where glagolati and resti are used with other verbs of speech, e.g., vbprosi glagolje, otbvestavb rece, should be treated separately from the case where they are used independently, e.g., glagola, rece. As the result of a detailed analysis of the text I concluded that simple aorists of rece type are used typically in the context where emphasis is put on the content of a direct speech rather than the occurrence of the speech act in physical terms. Simple aorsits of glagola type are, on the other hand, employed in the context where the occurrence of the speech act itself is emphasized, not the content of a direct speech. I also observed that composite verbs of speech containing glagolje and rece show a distribution parallel to simple aorists such as glagola and rece, respectively. This distributional difference is a predictable outcome of the fact that glagolati is an imperfective verb whereas reiti is a perfective verb.
