The aim of the present paper is to refute that K. N. Grigoryan in Russkaya Literatura, no. 4 (1983), in which he makes an enthusiastic but baseless attack on my paper 'The Georgian Problem in Lermontov's Narrative Poem Mtsyri', fabricating what he calls 'my view'. He contests that Lermontov looked upon the annexation of Georgia to Russia as progressive and historically justified. In his argument he employs the stereotyped expression 'voluntary entry into the Russian camp' no less than four times, a way of thinking which is universal among Soviet Historians. I point out that it is necessary to take a critical view of Soviet scholars' appreciation of Russo-Georgian affairs between 1798 and 1803, and show that the annexation was far from 'voluntary' on the part of Georgia, but rather forced upon her by the other party. In Soviet historical circles subsequent to the 'Pokrovsky critique', and against the background of the escalating Stalinist cult of personality and Greater Russian chauvinism, there was a tendency to look favourably upon the colonial policies of tsarist Russia, regarding them as the so-called 'least evil'. In Chapter 2 I criticise the process by which this view of history grew in dimension, and show that the formula of the 'least evil' as applied to the Georgian problem is unscientific and degenerates into a mere 'theory to beautify tsarist Russian colonial policy. Moreover, Lermontov scholarship has been unable to free itself from this aspect of Soviet thinking. I believe that it was in these circumstances that the mistaken appreciation of the narrative poem Mtsyri was born. In Chapter 3 I look into the changes in interpretation of the poem Controversy Which have occurred in the history of Lermontov scholarship, and show that a fundamental shift took place around the year 1940. In recent times there are a small number of scholars who have broken away from the influence of the mistaken view of history, but the main stream continues unchanged. I contest that Mr. Grigoryan's criticism was made within this context, and suggest that it deserves reconsideration.
