This paper begins with an analysis of the first stanza of Lermontov's Mtsyri. The narrator supports the union of Georgia and Russia in the stanza. It has been accepted among Lermontov's students in the Soviet Union that Lermontov himself affirmed the union. But our interpretation differs from the established one. The narrator does not always represent the real voice of the poet. The lines of the narrator contradict those expressed in the rest of the poem. The allegorical words and images in the first stanza have been analyzed by comparing them with those in the others. Also, we have been reviewed historical facts of Georgia in the beginning of the nineteenth century. Finally, we have come to the conclusion that Lermontov held a critical opinion about the situation of Georgia after the union. Therefore, one can not truly appreciate the voice of the poet if one fails to understand Lermontov's critical opinions.
