A Korean text-to-speech system based on a formant synthesis method has been developed. High quality of Korean synthesized speech has been obtained using a reasonably sized set of demisyllable elements as the synthesis unit. This paper describes a method of database construction for Korean. It also shows all the aspects of synthesis rules for the Korean text-to-speech system. The rules are required for:(1)a linguistic process;converting an input text into the phonetic units, (2)a synthesis process;generating and concatenating synthesis units to construct data packages for the spoken output message. All these method have been implemented on a personal computer with a digital signal processing board which is designed for real time processing. The validity of the proposed method was indicated by the articulation test on the natural speech and on the synthesized speech.
