For the purpose of attempting at the intra- and inter-regional correlation of the Japanese Neogene, based on the present knowledge of biostratigraphic data of micro- (especially planktonic) and macro-fossils and relevant radiometric datings, a symposium "Neogene biostratigraphy and radiometric datings in Japan" was held at the Chiba University, Chiba near Tokyo, on April 6, 1972, as a part of the 79th annual assembly of the Geological Society of Japan. This volume chiefly consists of papers read at the symposium and discussions followed, with some revisions and additions. In August 1971, IKEBE, TAKAYANAGI, CHIJI and CHINZEI had prepared the first preliminary report of work done by members of "The Working Group for the Neogene Biostratigraphy and Geochronology in Japan for the Purpose of Intercontinental Correlation" (IKEBE, et al, 1972). The present volume may correspond to the second preliminary report, in which particular data are dealt with in some detail.
