Although the ground water quality management is a relatively new scientific field, it has been paid a world-wide attention in recent years, reflecting the shortage of water resources and the degradation of subsurface waters as well as surface waters. This paper deals with the fundamental features of artificial groundwater pollution. Various contaminative species, its effects to human beings, pollution sources, and physical, chemical and biochemical behavior of the contaminative species in subsurface regions are summarized. Subsequently, four cases of groundwater pollution in foreign contries caused by heavy metals, synthetic organic compounds, and pathogenic agents are introduces. Their hydrogeological envdronments of the polluted area, social backgrounds of the pollution, and concentration distributions in aquifers, are described. Remedial measures of polluted groundwaters is briefly referred.
