The relation between the pollution of lake water and the urbanization of the catchment area of the lake was studied. In Lake Inbanuma, a shallow eutrophic lake in the northern part of Chiba Prefecture, the rate of eutrophication has been increased with increase of domestic sewage entering to the Shinkawa River which flows finally into the lake. Changes of the fractionated phosphorus in the surface sediments with the water flow from the river to the lake, as well as the vertical profiles of aluminum phosphorus and iron phosphorus in the sediments, indicate a recent marked increase of phosphorus loading to sewage. From the upper streams, the Kanno River and the Kanzaki River which enter the Shinkawa River were polluted by the domestic sewages from the urban area recently developed on the Shimosa upland. The Shimosa upland, formerly called Narashinohara, was a waste field, but since 1957 the large-scale construction of house lot has been developed and the population is increasing rapidly.
