The Quaternary system of Takayama City district is divided into six gravel beds and two pyroclastic flows, based upon geomorphological, stratigraphical and mineralogical data. It is assumed that this district has been an upheaval area since the Early Pleistocene, confering from the occurrence and the distribution of the basement rocks. From the lastest age of the Early Pleistocene to Middle Pleistocene, the fault activities occurred and the area was divided into two sedimentary areas, the north and the south. In the south area, the talus deposits are developed, on the contrary, the river terraces are formed in the north.
