It is necessary for study on active faults to clarify the characteristics of fault movements such as steady or irregular creep, a seismic or coseismic stick slip and pre- or post-seismic slip of faults. The most important investigation is, however, on geodynamics of fault movements based on continuous observation and geodetic survey of strain distribution around faults and of its time change. Furthermore, the investigation is related directly to the method or earthquake-prediction. In the present paper, an example of the surveying results of horizontal displacements near an active fault will be introduced to aid the explanation. Some problems on analyzing the time and space distributions of the horizontal displacements are presented and a brief review about some results of observation of fault movements is attempted in relation to the problems. Some observations along the San Andrcas fault system are described as the main part of the explanation, and the difficulty of the interpretation on observed results is emphasized for all substantial data in this review. It is quite important to be noticed that strain state, either in accumulating homogeneously around faults or in concentrating along faults or in releasing completely by slip of faults, should be related to occurrence of great earthquakes. It should be recognized the fact that the difficulty, lies even on a transform fault as the San Andreas fault, much more on complicated fault system in Japan Island Arc.
