In this paper, the author discusses rock slope failure in dam construction, which is an important aspect of engineering geology. Five case studies are cited to illustrate the conditions, causes and factors for slope failure from a geological viewpoint, as well as the formulation of preventative and remedial measures. The author's study explores the relationship between rock slope failtue and dam construction. Rock slope failures are closely connected with characteristics of fracture systems, and are affected by a combination of factors such as groundwater, filling materials of the discontinuity plane, gravity, earth quakes, and other natural as well as man-made forces. The relationship between these factors and rock slope failure is discussed for five cases of dam construction, and preventative and remedial measures are suggested to prevent slope failure or to limit its damage. In order to minimize rock slope failure, the author proposes thorough study in site selection and layout for dam construction as well as feedback studies both before and after construction to evaluate appropriate dam design and construction practices.
