Bacteroides melaninogenicus, a normal inhabitant of mouth and other parts of digestive tract, has been extensively investigated by the deceased author as to its occurrence, morphology, staining and physiology. Cultural procedures using 16 fluid media and 10 solid media has been described. Biological tests including production of indol, hydrogen sulfide and ammonia, gelatin liquefaction, milk coagulation, casein liquefaction and neutral red reduction have been carried out, together with those of catalase reaction and lipid and carbohydrate degradation. Schwarzmann reaction and agglutination test have been also described. It is to be noteb that certain degree of pathogenicity has been established in experimental animals such as mouse rabbit and marmot, and in lesser degree in man. The characteristic melanin-like substance deposited in fluid media has been spectrographically studied and identified as melanin.
