Pulpotomy by the FC method was performed on the deciduous teeth of young dogs and changes in nerve fibers in the residual vital pulp after cutting terminal ending of the peripheral nerve fibers were investigated neurohistologically. The results were as follows : 1. On the third day after operation, although almost all of the nerve fibers in the necrosed layer disappeared, degenerative nerve fibers were found sporadically. Atrophy of the neuclei of the pulp cells and deposition of hyalinized materials were seen below the cut-surface where the nerve fibers almost disappeared, thickening, bending, and fragmentation were also observed. Where inflammatory change was severe and appearance of macrophages was marked, the nerve fibers showed fragmentation, granular disintegration and traces. 2. On the seventh day after operation, regenerated minute nerve fibers accompanied by Schwann's cells began to extend in the dental pulp below the inflammation site. 3. On the tenth day after operation, the inflammation focus extended into hyalinized region below the cut-surface, and traces of nerve fibers, grannulation of nerve bundles, and beading of degenerated nerve fibers were observed. Relatively thin nerve fibers were observed where inflammtory granulation tissue formed owing to proliferation of fibroblasts. Internal resorption was seen in dentin and only thin single nerve fibers about to disappear were observed. 4. In 14 to 21 days after operation, where atrophy of the necleus of cells and hyalinization had occurred, abundant inflammatory granulation tissue and fibrous elements were observed. Although thin nerve fibers, small nerve bundles, and minute single nerve fibers were observed, many were regenerated nerve fibers. 5. On the 35th day, inflammatory granulation tissue and fibrosis were observed in the dental pulp at this time. Where these changes were seen, minute regenerated nerve bundles and minute regenerated nerve fibers were observed, but their distribution was decreased. Granulation resorption was still observed as late as this period. Where this change was seen, nerve fibers nearly all disappeared. However, some healthy nerve fibers also were observed in the proper dental pulp. 6. On the basis of the foregoing findings, the FC method suggests a healing trend by fibrosis. However, internal resorption was induced by inflammatory granulation tissue from the tenth day, and distribution of nerve fibers was decreased because of continuation of these changes as late as the 35th day. In clinical work where the knowledge of relation with sense in the dental pulp is necessary, establishing diagnostic criteria made by pain is difficult.
