Zinc concentration in enamel and dentin of extracted human permanent teeth was determined by using atomic absorption spectrophotometry (Hitachi 180-50 model). The results were as follows : 1. The mean values of zinc concentrations in impacted third molars (n=13) were 176±22μg/g in enamel and 170±25μg/g in dentin. 2. The mean values of zinc concentrations in early caries (C_I and C_II, n=15), caries with pulpitis (n=52) and caries with apical periodontitis (n=6) were 152±24μg/g, 181±40μg/g and 198±74μg/g in enamel, and 161±23μg/g, 164±31μg/g, 184±43μg/g in dentin. Furthermore, that in tooth stumps (n=43) was 237±69μg/g in dentin. These results show that enamel zinc concentration significantly decreases at the early stage in dental caries and both of enamel and dentin zinc concentrations remarkably increase at the progressive stage in dental caries.
