A histological study was carried out on the growth of and age change in the mucous membrane of the mouth of rats, starting from 10th day after birth and for a maximum of 500th day. Results are summarized as follows : 1. The keratinized layer was generally thin until about 20th day after birth and its thickness increased thereafter with age but was found decreased slightly on 500th day. The keratinized layer in each of the hard palate, gingiva, and tongue was generally thick but that in the cheek and lips was not well developed. The lingual filiform papillae were characterized by conical keratinized pegs. 2. The epithelial mucous membrane, of any location, tended to decrease its thickness in old age and atrophy of the epithelium in the hard palate and cheek was significant. 3. The development of the epithelial peg was generally remarkable in young age but decrease with age. Differences in age change by location was observed : the teeth just after eruption did not show any epithelial pegs in the gingival crevice and the those of the cheek were generally thick. 4. Until 20th day, the fibrous connective tissues of lamina propria were fine, dense in arrangement, and disorderly in their running direction. However they became bulky and rough in arrangement with age. At the junction area of the epithelium and the lamina propria, the fibers were bending, massing, and rupturing of the fibers were significant. 5. In the hard palate, the boundary between the lamina propria mucosae and tela submucosa was distinct until 20th day but became obscure with age. 6. The submucosa showed a significant increase in the cell density in young age but a significant decrease in the connective tissue cells in old age. The adipose tissue tended to show a significant increase with age, but was found decreased in the hard palate on 500th day.
