No definite occlusal treatment method for patients with TMJ dysfunction or with periodontal disease has yet been established. It was therefore considered necessary to examine tooth contact condition at intercuspal position and eccentric position in its adjacent area in normal dentulous subjects in order to provide a way for establishing such a method. Twenty-five normal dentulous subjects were selected and tooth contact condition at intercuspal position and lateral occlusal position, 20 mm anterior to the maxillary central incisors and for every 1 mm up to 3 mm from intercuspal position, were observed and studied. Silicon rubber impression material was used for recording contact condition. The results were as follows : 1. Over-bite was 2.7±1.5 mm and over-jet was 3.3±1.3 mm. 2. Contact point at intercuspal position was 30.0 ± 5.8 points and no significant difference was observed between the right and left sides. 3. With regards contact condition on working side, simultaneous contact of the canine and the first premolar were most frequently observed in pattern for both the maxilla and mandible. A high frequency of contacts was observed in the canine and the first premolar and the contact rate increased with lateral excurtion. Most frequentry observed contact occlusal facets were in 'c' of the canine and 'a' of the first premolar for the maxilla and in 'b' of the canine and 'b' of the first premolar for the mandible. 4. With regards contact condition on the balancing side, the pattern in which only the second molar coming into contact was most frequent for both the maxilla and mandible. A high frequency of contact was also seen in the second molar for both jaws and contact occlusal facets were seen most frequentry in the second molar in 'h' and '1'' for the maxilla and in 'j' for the mandible. 5. Cross tooth balance was observed in 10 subjects but at 1 mm deviation of the mandibular position in most cases. 6. At 3 mm deviation of the mandibular position, true Cuspid protected occlusion where no contact on the balancing side occurs was observed in 2 subjects bilaterally and in 3 subjects unilaterally. 7. Significant difference in over-bite was observed between the subjects with Cuspid protected occlusion and the subjects with Group functioned occlusion. 8. At 3 mm deviation of mandibular position, contact condition resembling Full balanced occlusion occured unilaterally in 2 subjects.
