In treating malocclusion with deep overbite among the cases of anterior protrusion or deep overbite, bite-raising will be necessary. If the masticatory muscles, however, do not adjust themselves to the new position of the mandible after bite-raising, occlusion thus raised can not be stabilized. For the purpose of determining adaptability of the masticatory muscles, the author applied bite-plate in forty, mature laboratory rats and increased the distance between the upper and lower molars by 1.5-2.0mm. These rats were then killed in order on 10th, 20th, 30th, 60th, 90th, 150th, and 240th days. The masseter muscles, temporal muscles and digastric muscles were examined histo-pathologically. The findings were as follows : 1. At the begining of the experiment period, the muscles fibers of the masseter muscles enlarged and showed changes for adaptation. Begining on the 30th day, however, the muscle fibers began to atrophy and tended to lose their adaptability. 2. The temporal muscles showed similar changes as the masseter muscles did. 3. The digastric muscles showed greater and extensive atrophy at the begining. On and after 150th day, however, atrophy lessened to some extent and showed a trend for adaptation. 4. As an early change, the digastric muscles showed greater atrophy than the masseter muscles or the temporal muscles. Based on the preceeding findings, the indication was that achieving adaptability of the depresser muscles would be quite difficult when bite-raising by increasing the intermaxillary distance was undertaken past adolescence. The elevator muscles, on the other hand, had a tendency for adaptation.
