The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of lingual forms of upper anterior teeth on masticatory performance. At first, condylar path and incisal path of ten subjects who have natural dentitions were measured with a pantograph. Then, two types of anterior splints were made by a self-curing resin. One splint has an angle of incisal path inclination 5 degrees sharper than the present angle of subjects and another has an angle 10 degrees sharper. With these splints, path of masticatory movement and masticatory performance of each subject were measured. Furthermore, the relationship between the angles of inclination and mastication variational rate which is the measured value divided by the relative value was evaluated. The results were as follows : 1. The path of masticatory movement was stable with increasing the angles of sagittal and lateral incisal path inclination of lingual surfaces of upper anterior teeth. 2. Masticatory performance was increased with increasing the angles of sagittal and lateral incisal path inclination of lingual surfaces of upper anterior teeth. 3. As the difference between the angle of sagittal condylar path inclination and the angle of sagittal incisal path inclination was increased, the mastication variational rate was decreased. 4. As the difference between the angle of a top wall and the angle of lateral incisal path inclination was increased, the mastication variational rate was increased. The fact mentioned above saggested that lingual forms of upper anterior teeth are concerned with the path of masticatory movement and the masticatory performance, and care must be taken in the constructions of prosthesis in these regions.
