Male Wistar rats, 8-week-old, were given calcium-deficient diet and calcium low-deficient diet for three weeks, and bone debility was induced experimentally. The effect of the diet on the alveolar bone at the growing stage was then investigated. The results were as follows : I. Body weight Body weight decreased in order of the control, calcium low-deficient diet and calcium-deficient diet groups. II. X-ray findings on bone density The calcium-deficient diet group, as compared with the control group, showed significant differences with 1% significance level and showed low values. The calcium low-deficient diet group, as compared with the control group, showed significant differences with 1% significance level and showed low values. III. Histopatholigical findings The calcium low-deficient diet group, as compared with the calcium-deficient diet group, showed active bone reconstruction and about the same findings as the control group. IV. Scanning electron microscope findings The calcium low-deficient diet group showed about the same findings as the control group. V. Hematologic findings No significant differences were found among the control, calcium-deficient diet and calcium low-deficient diet groups. About the normal values were shown. On the basis of the foregoing findings, if sufficient calcium is taken during childhood and the state of peak bone mass is reached at puberty, it is clear that bone construction is hardly affected with regard to the calcium low-deficient diet group.
