This study was carried out to further understand the state of bony lesions in the jaws of elderly patients. Panoramic radiographs of 699 cases, kept in the Department of Dental Radiology at the Kyushu Dental College Hospital, were used to detect bony lesions. Of the 699 elderly patients, 327 were males and 372 were females. The results obtained in this study were as follows : 1. Of the 699 cases, 650 cases (302 males and 348 females) were patients who had visited the Department of Oral Surgery. This number represents 93% of the patients. 2. Of the 699 cases, 105 cases (42 males and 63 females) were edentulous in the both jaws. This number represents 15% of the patients. Edentulous in both jaws was significantly greater in females than in males. 3. The mean number of remaining teeth per dentate patient was 15.14±8.40 in males and 13.95±8.40 in females. The majority of the remaining teeth were in the mandible. The mean number of the remaining mandibular anterior teeth was 4.15±2.13 in males and 3.74±2.35 in females. These differences between males and females were not statistically significant. 4. The breakdown of teeth among dentate patients were as follows : (a) The majority of the remaining teeth were healthy teeth. The mean number of healthy teeth was 7.0±6.7 in males and 5.0±5.8 in females. (b) The mean number of the teeth treated prosthetically was 5.1±4.7 in males and 6.7±5.5 in females. (c) The mean number of untreated teeth among the remaining teeth was 1.7±2.0 in males and 1.3±1.6 in females. (d) There were less restorative teeth among the remaining teeth. The mean number of restorative teeth was 1.3±1.8 in males and 1.0±1.5 in females. 5. Although there was no significant difference between males and females on the number of remaining teeth, severe periodontal disease was seen in 16.5% of the males' and seen in 8.5% of the females' remaining teeth. The difference between males and females was statistically significant. 6. In the jaws of males, 604 bony lesions were detected while 663 bony lesions were found in the jaws of the females. The majority of the bony lesions in the jaws were root granuloma. Of the root granulomas, 479 were detected in the males and 593 in the females. The mean number of root granuloma per patient was 1.5 in males and 1.6 in females. 7. Seventy embedded teeth were detected in males and 34 in females. In the males, the majority of the embedded teeth were wisdom teeth in the mandible. In contrast, the majority of the embedded teeth in females were wisdom teeth in the maxilla.
