With 3 week old male Wistar rats as subjects, effect of intake of high protein food on formation of bone matrix in the mandibular condyle at growth stage was investigated electron microscopically. The results were as follows : I. Scanning electron microscope findings The high protein diet group showed about the same findings as the control group. The calcium deficient diet group as compared with the control group showed thicker chondrocyte layers and increase in the width of hypertrophic zone in particular. The borders of chondrocyte lacunae were unclear and many lacunar walls were occupied by ruptured collagen fibrils. Bone trabeculae continuing from subchondral bone formation zone showed active resorption findings and were formed thin. Chondral ossification was clearly decreased in the calcium deficient-high protein diet group as compared with the calcium deficient diet group. II. Transmission electron microscope findings The high protein diet group showed about the same findings as the control group. In the calcium deficient diet group, osteoblasts showing active bone formation, decreased as compared with the control group, and osteoblasts which were long in form increased. Mitochondria showed a tendency toward swelling and rough surfaced endoplasmic reticulum tended to enlarge. Osteocytes on the whole decreased, but many findings of osteoid osteocytes and young osteocytes were seen. Osteoclasts presented various morphology and were seen to increase, and bone resorption was active. In the calcium deficient-high protein diet group as compared with the calcium deficient diet group, increase in preosteoblasts and decrease in active osteoblasts were characteristic. On the basis of the foregoing findings, effect on the formation of bone matrix in the mandibular condyle at growth stage showed no difference in the high protein diet group as compared with the control group. In the calcium deficient-high protein diet group as compared with the calcium deficient diet group, however, formation of bone matrix was restricted.
