Effect of changes in the amount of calcium intake from food on the mandible has not yet been clarified fully. Three-week-old male rats of wistar strain therefore were maintained on a calcium-deficient diet and bone debility was induced in them. The rats were then given high-calcium food designed for easy absorption and containing a large amount of well-balanced minerals and the effect of food on the alveolar bone at growth stage was investigated. The results were as follows : 1. Analysis on the X-ray microanalyzer Relative Ca ratio and relative P ratio were obtained from the results of the quantity analysis by point analysis. In relative Ca ratio, the control group showed the highest values, followed by calcium-deficient food + mixed food group, calcium-deficient food + standard food group, and calcium-deficient food group. In relative P ratio, the calcium-deficient food + mixed food group showed the highest values, followed by the control group, calcium-deficient food + standard food group, and calcium-deficient food group. 2. Histopathological findings The calcium-deficient food + mixed food group did not show as much restoration to normalcy as the control group but showed acceleration of bone construction in the whole of the alveolar bone and increase in trabeculae. Invation into the bundle bone by periodontal membrane fibers also was observed. 3. Scanning electron microscopic findings The calcium-deficient food + mixed food group was smaller in overall size as compared with the control group but showed denser and thicker osseous layers as compared with the calcium-deficient food group and calcium-deficient food + standard food group. Around the bone lacunae, active formation of bone matrix of calcified small bone pieces was seen and bone construction was accelerated. 4. Hematological findings No significant difference was found between the control group and calcium-deficient food + mixed food group and about normal values were shown. On the basis of the foregoing findings, administration of high-calcium food for bone debility has proved to accelerate calcification of bone and bone construction.
