The mandibles from males of litter mates of Tokyo-D rabbits, experimental animals, were used. Fifty-seven rabbits, from immediately after birth to 24 months old, were used for this experiment. The results were as follows : 1. Morphological growth process of the mandible Growth in length and in height was remarkable from immediately after birth through the 3rd month, became gradual thereafter, and showed a maximum at the 8th or 9th month. Growth in length was greater than that in height. Growth in width was earlier than that in length or in height and remarkable through the 2nd month. 2. Split lines 1) Line system : A base line system, suggestive of the direction of future growth, exists immediately after birth. 2) Irregular split lines : These lines appear at several locations and constitute base split lines. These lines increase or decrease subject to the following conditions. * When there is strong morphological growth such as aging. * When there is an external force applied attachment of muscle. 3. Individual variations When animals are to be used for an experiment, it is necessary to select animals carefully in order to achieve stable results. The author therefore used animals of pure breed. The results of this experiment and observation showed very little individual variations.
