Three-week-old rats of Wistar strain were placed on a calcium-deficient diet and experimental osteoporosis was induced. These rats were then given standard diet and the effect of diet on the mandibular condyle, tibia epiphysis, and tibia metaphysis was investigated radiologically and histopathologically. The results were as follows : I. Radiological findings 1) The mandibular condyle became large. Its dense osseous layer became thick and the surfaces became smooth. Trabeculae increased, had even width, and methodically ran vertically from the articular surface. The structure and morphology of the mandibular condyle were restored to those of the controls at six weeks after the experiment. 2) The tibia epiphysis became large and its morphology was well in order. Its dense osseous layer was thick and the surfaces were smooth. Trabeculae increased and nearly methodically ran vertically from the articular surface. The structure and morphology of the tibia epiphysis were restored to those of the controls at five weeks after the experiment. 3) The tibia metaphysis became large and its surfaces were smooth. Trabeculae increased and nearly methodically ran vertically. The structure of tibia metaphysis was restored to that of the controls at five weeks after the experiment. Morphology, however, was inferior in comparison with the controls. II. Histopathological findings 1) In the mandibular condyle until five weeks after the experiment, the cartilage layer became thin owing to a decrease in hypertrophic chondrocytes. Chondrocytes were arranged regularly. Calcified matrix surrounding hypertrophic chondrocytes, chondroclasts and erosion by chodroclasts increased, and trabeculae increased and widened. The structure of the cartilage layer and the number and width of trabeculae were restored to those of the controls at five weeks after the experiment. 2) In the tibia metaphysis until five weeks after the experiment, the cartilage layer thinned owing to a decrease in hypertrophic chondrocytes. Calcified matrix surrounding hypertrophic chondrocytes, chondroclasts and erosion by chondroclasts increased. The number and width of trabeculae increased. They ran vertically with fusion between them. The structure of the cartilage layer was restored to that of the controls at six weeks after the experiment. The number and width of trabeculae were restored to those of the controls at four weeks after the experiment. 3) In the tibia metaphysis until five weeks after the experiment, the cartilage layer was reduced owing to a decrease in hypertrophic chondrocytes. Collumnar arrangement of chondrocytes was seen. Calcified matrix in space among hypertrophic chondrocytes, erosion, and the number of trabeculae increased, and they ran vertically. The structure of the cartilage layer was restored to that of the controls at five weeks after the experiment. The number and width of trabeculae were restored to those of the controls at four weeks after the experiment. On the basis of the foregoing findings, it was found that experimental osteoporosis induced by calcium-deficient diet in rats at the growing stage tended to recover morphologically and histologically by administration of calcium.
