With use of 24 meriones unguiculatus weighing 60-70g, light microscopic and scanning electron microscopic investigations were made of structure of the mucous membrane of the soft palate and tissue construction of the section between the soft palatal mucous membrane and the mucous membrane of nasopharyngeal meatus facing the palate. The results were as follows : 1. The whole surface of the soft palatal mucous membrane was covered with keratinized stratified squamous epithelium. 2. The soft palate did not have any of the papilla-like structures observed in man and various animals and showed quite a flat structure. 3. Mucous epithelium contained a comparatively large number of taste buds. Palatal glands had their opening at various places on the mucosa surface. Both the taste buds and palatal glands were mainly distributed laterally near the median line. 4. Lamina propria mucosa on the oral cavity side had no elastic lamina. 5. The palatal glands were mucous in nature and acini were compound alveolar in form. 6. The muscular layer appeared from the mid-point anteroposteriorly and toward the back. Muscular fibers and acini mingled in places on lateral sides of the soft palate. 7. Mycteric lamina propria mucosa had mucous glandules and infraglandular elastic lamina in places. 8. In the nasopharyngeal epithelium, the region corresponding to the anterior region of the soft palate was covered with pseudostratified ciliated epithelium containing goblet cells ; the region corresponding to the middle region of the soft palate with pseudostratified ciliated epithelium, and the region corresponding to the posterior region of the soft palate with keratinized stratified squamous epithelium and stratified short columnar epithelium. 9. Nasopharyngeal meatus epithelium had taste buds distributed scatteredly.
