Pressure exerted during functioning and at rest by oral soft tissue is in close relations with dental arch form and is considered to be important for formation of dental arch, maintenance of occlusion, and retention of the arch after orthodontic treatment. In clinical orthodontics, the anterior teeth are moved lingually in treatment of malocclusion and tongue space is reduced as a consequence. This reduction is considered to compress the tongue and increase tongue pressure. However its chronological changes have not yet been clarified. The purpose of this study therefore was to elucidate chronological changes in the tongue pressure with reduction in the tongue space. Eight adult males were used for this study and reduction in tongue space was achieved by placing a 5mm-thick resin plate on the maxillary and mandibular incisal teeth. Tongue pressure was measured with a strain gauge transducer. Measurements were taken for one hour for each subject and time-pressure integrals for the latter half 30 minutes of the period, exclusive of deglutition, were obtained. Measurements were taken before and at placing plate, on first and second days, and for six weeks at one week intervals. The results were as follows : 1. At reduction of tongue space, the time-pressure integrals at the maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth increased significantly. After reduction of tongue space, tongue pressure decreased until after 3 weeks in the maxilla and 2 weeks in the mandible. Thereafter the pressure remained rather constant in both jaws. These pressures were higher than those before reduction. 2. Before reduction in tongue space, tongue pressure at the maxillary anterior teeth was lower than that at the mandible's and the difference was significant. Increase in tongue pressure due to reduction in tongue space was greater at the maxillary anterior teeth than that at the mandible's for any measuring point in time. However, the tongue pressure at the maxillary anterior teeth always remained lower than that at the mandible's. This relation suggested that adaptation of the tongue to reduction in tongue space was about the same in both jaws. 3. In one subject in whom the tongue pressure before reduction in tongue space was comparatively high, not much reactions were seen after reduction. This finding appears to suggest that the tongue with high tongue pressure before placing plate adapts itself poorly during reduction of the tongue space. On the basis of the foregoings, it is suggested that the tongue adapts itself to change in the dental arch form with reduction in tongue space.
