The purpose of this study is to investigate the changes in the osseous palate in the case of the application of a rapid lateral expansion to the maxillary dental arch. And the present experiment was carried out by using the method of split line. Materials used were 17 adult cats. The animals were equipped with the expansion appliance with a screw. After maxillary expansion for 15 days, for a total of 3mm with one-fourth rotation per day, materials were divided into 8 groups of 1 day, 10 days 20 days, 1-4 months, and 6 months, with the appliance left as it was. After completion of the fixed retaining, the width of expansion during each period was measured between canines and the changes in the bony palate were examined by using the method of Benninghoff's split line. The results obtained are as follows : 1. After the full separation of the macroscopic sutura palatina mediana for 10 days and 20 days of retention, the sutura turned into a rectilinear one in order of the incisive bone, the palatinal bone, and the maxilla. 2. Owing to the maxillary expansion during the period of retaining, an irregularly split line was observed extensively in the bony palate in order of the maxilla, the palatinal bone and the incisive bone. 3. The occurrence of irregularity of the sutura palatina mediana was confirmed in the maxilla for one day of retention and in the incisive bone for 20 days of retention. In the palatinal bone it was noted in the rear of the sutura palatina transversa for 10 days retention. After one month of retention every bone presented irregularity in the widest range of the palate. It was observed through the whole area of the bony palate. 4. With regard to the regularization of irregularly split lines, the incisive bone and the palatinal bone showed a line system almost resembling the control pattern in 2 and 3 months of retention, and the maxilla in 4 months of retention. As mentioned above, the process of bone reconstruction produced by the rapid maxillary expansion was demonstrated as changes in the split line.
