This paper is intended to describe the preliminary result of work, in which the writer has been engaged for the last ten years in the field of utilization of geothermal energy for electric power. The difficulties met in this subject are well known. Such a problem can only be solved by the complex studies of magma, state of interstitial water and the characteristics of rock formation, and these depend on the fundamental geophysical studies of the thermal state in the upper part of earthcrust (Fig. 1). From this point of view, geophysical study of the underground structure in geothermal province has been carried out by the writer. The former part of this report is devoted to the consideration on the geothermal source. In the middle part, it deals mostly with the transportation of heat associated with steam, and secondarily, the conduction and convection of it through the reservoir and fissure zone. Finally, some discussions are tried on the method of exploration applying geophysical prospecting. Short explanations are given successively in the following. Though the problem of magmas origin has been unsolved, we can imagine the existence of "magma" as geothermal heat source. After once it happened, the heat of this melt (magma) would be gradually infiltrating and propagating to the surrounding country rocks, consequently this melt would begin cooling during solidification. After the writer's calculation, the temperature decrease of magma becomes as like Fig. 2, by assuming a spherical model having radius "a" in place of this melt. The average life of an volcan is known to be 10^4 or 10^5 years, therefore the present result of magma's calculation does not contradict to it.
