As our readers are aware, this new English-language journal, Oral Medicine and Pathology, issued by the Japanese Society for Oral Pathology, has started publication. This is surely a milestone in Japanese dentistry. I would like to describe the history of the Japanese Society for Oral Pathology. When Japan officially opened her gates to outsiders in 1858, after abut 240 years of national isolation, German medicine was introduced into Japan. At the same time American dentists brought American dentistry into Japan. In that period, Japanese stomatology was influenced by both German medicine and American dentistry. Until 1883, dentists were classified as medical practitioners in Japan. Therefore, Japanese dentistry has had close links to medicine. In 1906 dentistry was regulated by law for the first time in Japan. In the late 19th century, the first dental school was started in Tokyo, and its curriculum included general pathology and dental pathology. The first dental school in the U.S.A., indeed the first one in the world, was founded at Baltimore in 1840. Apparently in dental schools in U.S.A. the term "oral pathology" instead of "dental pathology" came into use after World War II. In Japan "oral pathology" also appeared gradually around the same time, but actual changes in practice occurred quite slowly. At the 20th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Association for Oral Biology (JAOB), from September 23 to 24, 1978 in Gifu, Japan's oral pathologists met to discuss the future of oral pathology. Dr. T. Terasaki, Professor of Gifu Dental College, the conference organizer, advocated the holding of a slide oral pathology conference at every annual meeting of the association. In the next JAOP meeting at Sapporo in 1979, Professor A. Amemiya of Hokkaido University started the first slide oral pathology conference. Subsequent slide conferences took place at Nihon University at Matsudo in 1980 prepared by Professor Y. Awazawa, at Tohoku Dental University in 1981 by Professors H. Kawahara and T. Saito, at Tsurumi University in 1982 by Professors N. Sugawara and M. Akiyoshi, at Fukuoka Dental College in 1983 by Professor K. Kitamura, at Matsumoto Dental College in 1984 by Professor S. Eda, at Nippon Dental University at Niigata in 1985 by Professor M. Katagiri, at Showa University in 1986 by Professor S. Yoshiki, at Higashi Nippon Gakuen University in 1987 by Professor T. Okuyama, at Kyushu University in 1988 by Professor N. Hashimoto, and at Tokushima University in 1989 by Professor Y. Hayashi, at the time of each JAOB annual meeting. However, JAOB meetings were mainly concerned with oral biology and basic dental science rather than clinical dentistry. Pathology is not only a basic science but also a clinical subject. It underlies the clinical services of biopsy and autopsy, besides making clear the nature of diseases in structure and function, leading to the understanding of their causes, processes, and results. In 1990 we were able for the first time to have our own Japanese oral pathology meeting which joined the 5th International Association of Oral Pathologists (IAOP) at Tokyo. I was the organizing committee chairman of this joint meeting. For collaboration with IAOP the Japanese Association of Oral Pathologists (JAOP) was established in place of the slide conference of oral pathology. The 33 founders were oral pathologists from all 29 dental schools in Japan. The name of the founding doctors were as follows; Drs. A. Amemiya, S. Eda, M. Fukushima, H. Fukuyama, N. Hashimoto, Y. Hayashi, T. Ishiki, T. Kaku, Y. Kameyama, M. Katagiri, K. Kitamura, I. Moro, N. Nagai, H. Nikai, H. Okabe, T. Okuyama, K. Ooya, T. Saito, M. Shimono, S. Suga, N. Sugawara, A. Suzuki, H. Takeuchi, A. Tanaka, A. Urago, N. Utsumi, K. Watanabe, T. Yagi, Ha. Yamamoto, Hi. Yamamoto, A. Yamazaki, T. Yanagisawa, and S. Yoshiki. All of them were also members of the managing committee of the 5th IAOP. In the local organizing committee of the 5th IAOP the vice-chairmen were
