It is well-known that malignant lymphomas, despite of their common origin from lymphocytes, show quite different clinical behaviors ; the spectrum ranges from low-grade ones not necessarily require treatment to highly malignant diseases which need extensive therapies. On the identification of disease entity in these various diseases, there have been confusion and disagreement among pathologists. In 1994, an international group of expert hematopathologists summarized the accumulating evidences on lymphoid neoplasms, and they proposed a new classification known as the "Revised-European-American Lymphoma" (REAL) Classification. This paper provides a historical view of the lymphoma classification, conventionally divided into 2 categories: before REAL and after REAL.
