This paper describes various technologies for compliance with diesel engine emission regulations up to the year 2000. It is anticipated that future diesel emission standards will be met by a combination of systems, including such innovations as high-pressure injection, injection rate control, strong turbulence in the later stages of combustion, cooled EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation), SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) and particulate trap filters. For further reduction of NO_x, the application of water may be required.
