The First Part of Henry VI can be regarded as the tragedy of John Talbot, because of his chivalrous deeds in the battlefield of France. One of episodes which made him the most brilliant commander should be Act II, scene iii, the scene of the Countess of Auvergne, which is totally invented by Shakespeare's imagination. In this article, the writer tries to find how many political perils there must have been in Elizabethan England by referring to the topical allusion between the Countess of Auvergne and Mary Stuart, the Queen of Scots, who had been in 'honourable custody' for almost twenty years in England. We will see it is not Elizabeth but Shakespeare that must have appreciated how much efforts George Talbot, the Sixth Earl of Shrewsbury, made to tackle the problems caused by the Queen of Scots.
