Nathaniel Hawthorne at the grey-haired and mossy age of 50 accepted the generous offer of his old college friend, President Pierce, and crossed the Atlantic to England for the first time. He took all his family with him, which seems to have been a desperate venture on his part to terminate the suffering of a sort of genteel poverty, and actually he was able to fulfill important but rather remunarative duties of the American consulship at Liverpool. During his unexpectedly long stay in U.K. and Europe, he visited the beautiful spa town of Leamington three times. This essay is an attempt to analyze the characteristically ambiguous attitudes of his to England and British ladies, focusing on a very rare, for him, and interesting case of the straightforward favour shown by him toward the "clean pretty spot."
