Yoshio Markino (1869-1956) was born to a samurai family at a small castle village called Koromo, which has since attained an international eminence as the principal factory town of the Toyota Automobile industry. Markino studied English and painting first in California in 1893 and then crossed the ocean to stay in London for half a century. Paris has attracted such a lot of bohemian-styled artists and literary aspirants since the publication of the Henry Murger's novel, while the fog of London was apparently less inviting in the eyes of foreign artists and writers. Yoshio Markino was captivated by the strangely beautiful effects of the London fog and actually is the right person to whose water colours as well as literary works (in English) dates the very familiar phrase in Japanese expressive of the foggy City, "霧のロンドン", literally meaning the foggy London but being rather suggestive of some romantic and fascinating image of the City to the Japanese mind. In this humble work based on the Yoshio Markino/Chatto & Windus correspondence (Univ. of Reading Library) I focus on the publication of his "Colour Series" including Colour of London and Colour of Paris to examine his bohemian life in London early this century.
