According to Lord Kames, man has a sense of chance or a feeling of liberty, but he regards this sense or feeling as deceitful or delusive. He thinks that the moral as well as the physical world is regulated by the necessary chain of cause and effect, and that the "necessity" must be the philosophical truth. This argument was treated as heretical by the evangelicals of the Church of Scotland, but was defended by the Moderate literati of Edinburgh. Robert Wallace, though his thought resembles that of the Moderate literati, criticises Kames, insisting in his Prospects (1761) that man has a true feeling of liberty. Kames in the third edition of his Essays (1779) deleted the former passages on the deceitful feeling of liberty.
