It is one of the basic works to study the regional and seasonal changes in tourist flow in nation wide for geography of tourism and recreation. However until very recently, this method has not been undertaken due to the insufflcient data. The present report therefore aims at presenting basic data on the regional and seasonal change in tourist flow visiting hot spring resorts in Japan. The results may be summarized as follows : l ) In Tohoku district at a long distance from Tol{yo metropolitan region, there are many local tourists from own district especially own prefecture alike western Kyushu and a part of Jo-shin district. On the other hand, in Tokai including lzu Peninsula and north Kanto districts around Tokyo, in Kinki and Chugoku districts around Osaka, many hot spring resorts are characterized by lots of tourists from metropolitan regions. They are located in about 200 km zone from Tokyo or Osaka. Hot spring resorts in Hokkaido district far from Tokyo have mainly been developed by many tourists from Tokyo and Osaka because of own special tourist resources and acces-sibility to metropolitan regions by progress of airplane traffic. 2) Three types of hot spring resorts, namely 1, Iocal, 2. intermediate, 3. wide area types were pointed out from view point of the seasonal change in tourist flow. Hot spring resorts as local type in Tohoku district are generally characterized by the local tourists during four seasons, and intermediate type especially shows the locality In other districts except Tohoku district, many in winter in southern Tohoku. tourists from wide area visit the hot spring resorts in a year round. 3 ) The significance of the regional and seasonal changes in tourist fiow is considered to be character of hot spring resorts and accessibility to great tourist markets. Tohoku district is remarkable primary industrial region, and have many hot springs for health, so farmers, fishermen and other local tourists go to near by hot springs. At the same time, the difference of accommodation facility and advertising activity of hot spring resorts determine the types of the regional and seasonal changes in tourist flow. Atami spa, the most advanced hot spring resort in Japan, which is located near Tokyo shows the constant tourist flow in regional and seasonal changes. 4 ) Local type hot spring resorts in Tohoku district generally have good environment comparing with other types characterized by uniformity and poor environment. Therefore, it is important to protect the good en\'ironment and to maintain the local charactor on regional policy in the future.
