It is widely accepted that proper control strategies of engine, power-train, and chassis provide drivers with good drivabilities. For example, observing the driving environment where the vehicle is driven is very useful to get good strategies for controled vehicle. In conventional methodologies, observing driving environments such as mountainous roads, highways, and so on used to require someoptional devices like C.C.D. cameras and sensory detectors. Unfortunately these methodologies increase the cost of vehicles. Therefore new methodologies that do not need optional devices must be developed. In this paper, I propose 'the Human sensor' that detects the driving environments by analyzing drivers' behaviors. As the drivers operate the steering wheel, accelerator and braking pedal, they recognize the driving environments with their eyes, ears and other sensory organs. Because a driver can be viewed as a set of sensors, the driving environments can be detected by analyzing drivers' behaviors. However due to the variety of behavior among drivers, it becomes difficult to predict the driving environmental stimulus. To combat this difficulty, fuzzy data is generated from drivers' behaviors. And fuzzy mathematical quantificationtheory No.2 is applied to the said fuzzy data. The result of this application was the generation of membership functions for detecting the driving environments. This paper applies this new methodology to the suspension control of the vehicleto show the merits of this human sensor technique. Considering driving characteristics of individuals, optimal human sennsor system is proposed.
