This article discusses the author's studies during the past thirty years or so on the metabolic functions of microorganisms with respect to environmental pollutants and energy resources such as methanol and ethanol. More specifically, it deals with the following five areas. (1) The microbial conversion of mercury compounds, with special reference to the decomposition of organic mercury and the formation of methylmercury from inorganic mercury. (2) The decomposition of polyvinylalcohol by Pseudomonas sp., and the relationship between the structure of poly-β-hydroxybutrate-related compounds and their biodegradation. (3) The microbial metabolism of C_1 compounds, with special reference to the assimilative pathway of methanol in Candida sp. (4) The diversity of 2-haloacid dehalogenases and their genes in relation to enzyme evolution. (5) Carbohydrate metabolism in the wild and recombinant strains of Zymomonas mobilis.
