• This paper presents a personal view of the challenges facing speech technology during the first ten years of the 21^<st>century. It suggests that whereas the basic component technologies are already well developed, there is still much work to be done before machines will be capable of the level of expression and understanding that is required for natural spoken interaction and for the comfortable transfer of digital information via voice. The paper focuses particularly on the challenges facing speech synthesis.
