Japan Disaster Relief (JDR) Team organized by JICA was dispatched May 22 to June 7 after the earthquake in northern Algeria on May 21 2003. A total of 2,266 people were killed, more than 10,000 were injured and 80,000 became homeless. The rescue team of JDR found one injured male under the rubble. Medical team of 22 experts set up field clinic tents in the stadium near site of epicenter on May 27. Most of the total of 1,628 out patients were severely shocked, complained various symptoms as insomnia, lumbar and back pain. Emergency nightshift service was also provided just after the biggest aftershock on the second day. Due to lack of sufficient safe water, eye, ear and skin diseases increased day by day. Since essential health services could not be expected, medical team provided primary health care and related services on behalf of suspended local government. Especially an emergency simple lavatory plan using local materials and personal hygiene leaflets written in Arabic were welcomed. Both emergency medical service and timely public health service must be recognized as essential relief components after natural disaster.
