There are many problems in the determination of a trace amount of carbohydrates in sea water, such as adsorption on a vessel wall and degeneration etc. The present communication reports a simple and reliable preservation method for the determination of carbohydrates in sea water. When the water sample was stored in polyethylene or glass bottles that had been used for several days at room temperature, or frozen, (16〜36)% of the carbohydrates was lossed. It may be due to adsorption on the vessel wall. However, when water sample was preserved in an unused, new polyethlene vessel even for 2 to 5 days, the high recoveries of carbohydrates (about 95%) was obtained. It is very effective to freeze the sample water in an unused polyethylene bottle on refrigerate(<-20℃). By this method, the carbohydrates could be preserved without degradation or loss by the adsorption of a vessel wall for 23 days.
