An indirect kinetic fluorimetric method for the determination of traces of sulfide, based on its inhibitory effect on the oxidation of pyridoxal nicotinylhydrazone by potassium persulfate is described. The reaction is followed spectrofluorimetrically by measuring the rate of change of the fluorescence intensity (λ_<ex> = 365 nm, λ_<em> = 450 nm). The calibration graph (percentage inhibition vs. sulfide concentration) is linear in the 10-80 ng S^<2-> ml^<-1> range. The interferences of the method are described.
