A simple and fast analytical method has been established for the determination of Mn, Nb, P, S, and Ti in niobium-containing pig irons by inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry. A vacuum spectrometer was used and the optical path between the spectrometer and plasma was purged with Ar. Samples for the determination of Mn, Nb, P, and Ti were dissolved in hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, and hydrofluoric acid. Samples for the determination of S were dissolved in the same acids after the samples had been mixed with potassium chlorate. Excessive hydrofluoric acid was masked by boric acid. Yttrium was added as an internal standard element.
