SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC DETERMINATION OF NICKEL AFTER ADSORPTION OF ITS MORPHOLINE-4-CARBODITHIOATE ON MICROCRYSTALLINE NAPHTHALENE

A method has been developed for the microdetermination of nickel after coprecipitation of its morpholine-4-carbodithioate on microcrystalline naphthalene and subsequent dissolution in chloroform. Molar absorptivity and Sandell's sensitivity at 390 nm are calculated to be 6.1 × 10^3 dm mol^<-1> cm^<-1> and 0.0096μg/cm respectively. Beer's law is obeyed over the range of 5-70 μg of nickel. Thirty jug of nickel in 10 ml of final solution gives a mean absorbance of 0.312 with a standard deviation of 0.0022 (relative standard deviation of 0.7%). The method has been applied to the determination of nickel in some alloys.
