The sensitizing effect of 16 quaternary ammonium salts on the spectrophotometric determination of germanium with phenylfluorone was compared. Benzalconium chloride gave the greatest increase in sensitivity: under the optimum conditions the sensitivity was about twice as high as that in the absence of this salt, the molar extinction coefficient of the complex formed being 1.81 × 10^5 dm^3 mol^<-1> cm^<-1> at 508 nm. The calibration curve was linear up to 0.16 ppm of germanium. Metal ions such as As^<3+>, As^<5+>, Pb^<2+>, Hg^<2+>, Cu^<2+>, A1^<3+> Fe^<2+>, Fe^<3+>, Cd^<2+>, and Zn^<2+> did not interfere with the determination, while Sb^<3+>, Sn^<2+>, Sn^<4+>, and Mo^<6+> gave positive errors.
