The pyridine-pyrazolone method has been used widely for the determination of cyanide ion, but pyridine has an unpleasant odor and does harm to worker. As one of the simple analytical procedures without using pyridine the isonicotinic acid-pyrazolone method was developed by Ishii et al. But the variability of the absorbance by this method was large, and the sensitivity was low, too. So the optimum condition for the operation was investigated and the revised procedure was established. The present method was applicable for the determination of cyanide ion in the range from 0.05 to 0.5 ppm. The standard deviation was ±1.8% on average absorbance 0.84 in the case of a sample containing 0.4 ppm of cyanide ion. The recommended procedure is as follows: To 25 ml of a neutral sample containing (0.05〜0.5) ppm of CN-, 10 ml of 0.5 M phosphate buffer solution(pH 6.6) and 0.5 ml of chloramine T solution were added. After standing the mixture at room temperature for 5 min, 10 ml of sodium isonicotinate-pyrazolone reagent was added and the mixture was kept at 25℃ for 30 min. The absorbance of the resultant solution was measured at 638 nm against the reagent blank.
