The scanning tunneling microscope (STM) is a useful device by which to observe the molecules adsorbed on an electroconductive surface with atomic resolution. However, how the tunnel current is affected by the molecules has not been clarified yet. In order to study the effect of the molecules, a new device was designed and constructed which can measure the tunnel current at various conditions. Using this device, it was found that the molecular image disappears when the tip is located near the surface. It was also shown that the tunnel current vs. tip-sample separation characteristics (I-s characteristics) for the molecule-adsorbed sample and nonadsorbed sample differ considerably. Based on these observations, a new mapping technique, tunnel gap imaging (TGI), which maps out the local I-s characteristics is proposed and realised for the first time.
